Fun at the Fall Volunteering Day at Schmid

October 25, 2017

On Saturday, October 21 the Space to Grow team had lots of fun with a great group of volunteers at Schmid Elementary. Over 30 people came out to help clean up the rain garden, including students and their parents, community members and members of the local church, the Junior League of Chicago and Public Allies. Everyone worked together to weed the rain garden, which is helping to reduce flooding in the area by capturing large amounts of rainwater. We enjoyed a beautiful fall day—right before we kicked off a week that’s been full of rain!

Thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers—even the local DJ stopped by to play us some music—and to all of the students and families who spent a lovely day outdoors. Principal Andrea Black expressed her gratitude and excitement continues for a wonderful school year ahead. Volunteers enjoyed tasty kefir treats from Lifeway and also took home butterhead lettuce seedlings donated by local partner Gotham Greens. We hope to see everyone again in the spring!
